Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
I've been to York before. I only stayed this time as I wanted to visit Castle Howard and was unable to within a day due to their limited opening times. I was glad I was leaving on Saturday though as the hen parties were arriving. How to put someone off a place in one go.

I just loved all the stuff you can do. Most of the things I did were history based, but the chocolate tour from the York Cocoa Works was very informative and just a bit different.
Not sure the Van Gogh Experience was really worth it, though it was interesting as a small museum.
I used a York Pass which made it significantly cheaper to do things and also meant that I didn't need to think about costs of the activities while I was there. It also meant that I was able to squeeze in extra stuff when I had the time.

Lots to do in this vibrant City, something for everyone and good transport links if you want to go further afield. If you're calorie counting don't step into a bakery as the choice of freshly baked buns and cakes is fabulous. I recommend you try a curd tart and a blondie!

We only had a short look around late afternoon on the day we arrived and then crabbed something to eat in one of the pubs. We only booked into the apartment for 2 nights as we were in the area for a family wedding and then going onto Whitby. We enjoyed what time
we were in York and will probably come back for a longer visit sometime in the future so that we can explore it in more detail.

Second time I have spent a couple of days in York.
It is a great city for a short break. Lots of bars, cafes, restaurants and intricate shops.
Any visits or tour you want to do need to be booked in advance as it is always very busy
the hotel indigo was perfectly located just on the edge of the city centre with just a 10 minute walk to the shambles, parking is available, (for a small fee) and all the staff were just brilliant.
our room was amazing, (we did opt for a senior room) spotlessly clean and very comfortable!
Breakfast was included and there was loads to choose from and the full Yorkshire was amazing, there was also a varied hot menu available.
actually there was nothing we could say against this hotel and we had a wonderful weekend!!
thank you,
Good location. Walking distance from most of York’s sights.
Good, comfortable and clean connecting rooms. They arranged that for us as a family.
Very helpful staff especially Tom who helped us with our bags when I had broken my ribs at this hotel in an accident and helped us load them into our car.
Reception staff was responsive and quick. And kind to also enable as late a check out as possible despite running full capacity, because I had a fresh fracture and could not move freely.
Great location overlooking the Shambles shopping street, with easy walk to all the sights of midtown York. 500 year old pub/hotel with lots of character. Our room and bathroom were huge, with interesting furniture and everything including the floors a little crooked. Really very charming. The bathroom had quite modern and lovely facilities while maintaining a sense of its age. The bar was pretty interesting, with a suite of armour in the hallway.
Location was very easily accessible to york city centre and staff was very helpful in writing all the bus services down for us that went right into York. The staff at the hotel was very friendly and great with my 2 kids, one of the managers even gave them both a free hot chocolate and went out of his way to talk to the kids. Overall if we stopped in york again we would definitely stop here again
Not a hotel as much as an airbnb type place but that was totally fine. Accessed my room key by a lockbox on the entry door, super easy. Awesome location just a stones throw from one of the city’s famous gates, leading to a pedestrian street bringing you straight to the Minster. My room was small but cozy and exactly what I wanted for a couple days in York. Lots of restaurants everywhere.
The manager was very welcoming, explaining how to use all the facilities thoroughly.
The location was perfect for accessing the city centre.
Having access to an underground secure car park was so a huge drawing card for us.
The view of the York Minster from the living room and one bedroom was fantastic.
Loved staying in a roomy apartment as oppsed to a room in a hotel.
Great hotel, the staff where really friendly. We chose this one because breakfast was included and the rooms where a good size. Breakfast was good. Our room also had a jacuzzi bath and a four poster bed. There was also parking round the back. It was about a 40minute walk into the centre of York and there was a nice pub down the road. We would stay here again.
The room was spacious with good amount of hanging space and a comfortable, large bed. Tea/ coffee/ biscuits provided. Easy to park and walking distance to city centre and all of York's offerings. Bar was reasonably priced and comfortable and the hotel has lots of additional comfortable seating space in it's public area and well kept gardens.
If you're a lover of English cathedrals, it doesn't get better than this. The Dean's Court is located literally across the street from the front towers of York Minster. The hotel is one of those older "Grand Dame" type of English hotels, with a lot of character. Staff was exceptionally helpful. Room was clean, comfortable, and large.
Lovely hotel. We stayed on the 6th floor in a club room with views of York minster. The room was clean and tidy, with a large
bed with a monsoon shower. Breakfast was exceptional.... especially the scrambled egg. Central York was easily accessible with a short walk. The staff were helpful and cheery. I would stay here again.
Very nice hotel, well presented, clean and fresh, distinctive style.
Room nicely decorated and finished - again, a lot of style.
Air conditioning in room worked well and came in very useful during what turned out to be a heatwave.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Good location, not far from York city centre and train station.
The leisure facilities available provided a lovely addition to our break away. The staff were great and very helpful. The location of the hotel was in walling distance from York City centre.
The king-sized bed was comfortable and a good addition to the room.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean the rooms were clean too.
Very good breakfast!
The hotel is perfectly located as it is close to the train station and very close to the city centre with most of York’s attractions!
Stayed the first time because they sponsored my sons Rugby team. Have stayed in two other York hotels but I just love the friendliness and ambiance of the Moxy and its convenience to the Minster and city centre. All the Staff are delightful.
Hotel is in excellent location 5 mins from Minster itself and centre of York. Room was large with king size bed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with many choices of cooked items which were cooked to order.
This may have been the cutest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in! Large room with four poster bed. Perfect location across from York Minster. Bed was comfy. Bathroom was spotlessly clean and modern.
all the staff were very friendly.
The room was very clean and a comfortable bed.
Breakfast and other meals were freshly cooked.
Hotel location is great - close to York town center.
Great location for travel to York. The hotel has generally been refurbished well. My room was small but well-laid out. The very busy and over-worked staff were polite and charming
